TI Some ways of HIV-infected individuals's adaptation.

AB OBJECTIVE: To study adjustment of HIV-patients in the situation of
psychosocial stress. METHODS: 225 HIV-individuals were examined in the
time of HIV-seropositivity's diagnosing for 4 years. 81 patients (36%)
of them were examined no more. The others were interviewed every time as
taking medical advise (2-4 times a year). The questions concerned the
adjustment and attempt to cope with stressors. RESULTS: Practically all
patients were in psychological crisis in the time of HIV-seropositivity
diagnosing. They demonstrated emotional disorders, suicidal ideation and
other acute psychological reactions. The presence of new stressors was
exposed as follow taking medical advise several months later. It was:
disclosure of HIV-seropositivity, discrimination (concerning a job,
giving medical help), assault, privations, breaking with relatives and
friends. Some ways of HIV-patients's adaptation were revealed: our
patients sought to group to undergo of new treatment for HIV-infection;
to get married to one another; to assist in work of nongovernment
organizations on AIDS or to establish their similar organizations; to
assist and to use the help of religious communities. On the other hand
increasing of alcohol use, tendency to be government's (or somebody's)
dependent, aspiration to live in hospital for the long time were
observed. Pronounced psychological HIV-patients's dependency on their
physicians was followed up. CONCLUSION: Positive and negative aspects of
HIV-patients's adjustment were determined. The medical providers's aim
is promotion positive trends of adjustment and decrease negative ways.
The government organizations's aim is establishment of common system
provided psychosocial support for HIV-infected individuals.
